How to use perfume testing strips ?

Using perfume testing strips, also known as fragrance blotters or scent strips, is a straightforward process. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to use them effectively:

Materials Needed

  • Perfume testing strips
  • Perfume or fragrance samples
  • Pen or marker (for labeling)

Steps

1) Prepare the Strips:

  • Take a perfume testing strip. These are typically made of absorbent paper designed to hold fragrance well.
  • Write the name of the perfume or a code on the strip using a pen or marker. This will help you remember which fragrance is on which strip.

2) Applying the Perfume:

  • Spray the perfume onto the testing strip from a distance of about 5-10 cm (2-4 inches). One or two sprays are usually sufficient.
  • Alternatively, if using a sample vial without a spray, dip the end of the strip into the perfume or use a small pipette to apply a drop.

3) Drying Time:

  • Allow the strip to dry for a few seconds. This helps the alcohol base of the perfume evaporate, leaving the true scent of the fragrance.
  • Waft the strip gently in the air to accelerate the drying process if necessary.

4) Smelling the Fragrance:

  • Hold the strip a few inches away from your nose. Avoid holding it too close to prevent overwhelming your sense of smell.
  • Take short, gentle sniffs rather than deep inhales. This helps you perceive the different notes of the fragrance more accurately.

5) Evaluating the Scent:

  • Smell the strip at different intervals (e.g., immediately after spraying, after 15 minutes, and after an hour) to experience the top, heart, and base notes of the perfume.
  • Note down your impressions of the fragrance at each stage if you are comparing multiple scents or conducting a detailed evaluation.

6) Comparing Multiple Fragrances:

  • When testing multiple perfumes, it’s helpful to have a cup of coffee beans or ground coffee nearby. Smelling the coffee beans can help reset your sense of smell between different scents.
  • Keep the labeled strips separate to avoid cross-contamination of fragrances.

Additional Tips

  • Environment: Conduct the testing in a well-ventilated area to avoid lingering scents that might interfere with your evaluation.
  • Storage: If you need to store the testing strips for later evaluation, place them in a sealed plastic bag or envelope to preserve the fragrance.
